TA2 DECIDER AND CLASSIC ENDURANCE RACE TO CONCLUDE 2022 AMRS AT WINTON
The TA2 Muscle Car Series Framed by Hytek title decider and classic Winton 300 endurance race will close the curtain on the 2022 Australian Motor Racing Series at Winton Motor Raceway this weekend, in an event that will see national champions crowned in three other national categories. While the TA2 Series round at Sydney Motorsport Park did not go according to plan for Jett Johnson, the third-generation racer still enters the round with a healthy 91 point buffer over his nearest challenger, Graham Cheney, with Nicholas Bates is a further 31 points adrift in third position.\Another factor working in Johnson’s favour is his past form at Winton - last time the TA2 Series visited the circuit in June, Johnson snared the overall round win with victories in three of the four races. The Mountain Motorsports Winton 300 has attracted an 18-car field with a typically diverse array of cars. The pace-setters are likely to include the two BYP Racing Honda Integras of brothers Benny and Jimmy Tran (and their yet-to-be-named co-drivers) and the turbocharged Mazda MX5 of former Wakefield and Sydney 300 winner Todd Herring, who will be joined by his 15-year-old son Jett Herring. However, the Winton 300’s unique division system, which requires the fastest cars in the race to spend additional time in pit lane, opens up the race to other outright challengers such as the Pinnacle Automotive BMW 328i of Daniel Kapetanovic/Adam Thompson, which emerged victorious in the Wakefield 300 earlier this year thanks to a perfectly executed strategy.Other notable entries include the Mini Cooper S of Barney Hogan and TCR Australia driver Iain McDougall, the Holden Astra of experienced production car aces Richard Whyte and Steve Knight, and the Ford AU Falcon of Steve Johnson and Matt MacKelden (see separate story). The Winton AMRS round will consist of three other categories. After making a welcome return to the AMRS at Sydney Motorsport Park, the Legend Cars are back on the program for Winton, staging their Australian title. Unlike the Legend Cars Australia Championship, which has already concluded for 2022, the Australian title will be based purely on the results from this weekend, with the driver who scores the most points across the five races walking away with the coveted #1 plate.Front-running contenders will include Shane Tate, Scott Morgan, Ryan Pring, Scott Melville and the Hourigan brothers, Brendon and Josh. The AMRS program will be completed by a combined grid for Thunder Sports and Stock Cars. In Thunder Sports, Cameron McKee holds a 19-point lead over Stephen Chilby in Class A, while Josh Dowell’s consistent performances throughout the season have ensured he has already wrapped up the title in Class B.Another welcome return to the Thunder Sports field will be Travis Condon, who suffered a crash in his distinctive green, V8-powered Toyota Corolla at the June race meeting but has since repaired his car.In the previous round at Sydney Motorsport Park, the Stock Cars attracted attention thanks to the number of historically significant vehicles in the field and this weekend’s Winton round will be a similar story, with entries including Greg Morris’ ex-Kevin Schwantz/Russell Ingall machine, and Mick Heppleston’s #41 machine, which raced on the Calder Park Thunderdome in the hands of Gene Cook.Coming into the round, Brett Mitchell leads the standings by just five points from Stephen Chilby, with Scott Nind in third position aboard his ex-Xfinity Series Stock Car.Download Event Schedule HEREWhere to watchSunday’s AMRS action will be live streamed via:AMRS Facebook pageAMRS YouTube channelSpectator EntryTickets are available at the gateFriday/Saturday – FREESunday – Adults $20, children under 16 free when accompanied by a paying adult
