Speedway Cars Taste Tarmac at Winton This Saturday

Speedway competitors from all over Victoria will have a chance to see how their cars perform on unfamiliar ground – a tarmac racing surface – at Winton Raceway’s inaugural Speedway Day this Saturday, 9 July.

Around 80-100 speedway cars will participate in the day, which will run on the two kilometre Winton Club Circuit.

Following a practice session for drivers to familiarise themselves with the track, a series of sprint sessions will be held, in which drivers compete against the clock to see who can record the fastest time for their category.

A number of familiar speedway divisions will be represented on the day, including Legend Cars, Standard Saloons and Street Stocks. There will also be a combined class for vehicles from other divisions.

Some of the most successful drivers in speedway competition will participate in the day’s activities, including national Street Stock Champion Anthony Beare.

Winton Operations Manager, Wayne Williams, himself a speedway competitor, said the response to the first-ever Winton Speedway Day has been outstanding.

“A few of my speedway acquaintances suggested this idea last year, so we decided to give it a go,” Williams said.

“To be honest, it has proven to be more popular than we expected – I think a lot of speedway competitors reached the end of the summer season and wanted something to do with their cars over winter.

“It will be interesting to see which cars record the fastest times – obviously the Legend Cars have already done some circuit racing at Winton but some of the other classes won’t be used to turning right.

“Unlike speedway, the drivers won’t have to worry about washing all the mud and dirt off their cars afterwards!”

Practice this Saturday will commence at 9:00am, followed by sprints for each division.

Spectator admission is $10 for the day, with children under 16 free.
